Resource sector skills
Following the work of the Australian Government’s National Resources Sector Employment Taskforce report Resourcing the Future (PDF 2.19MB), the predecessor of the Australian Workforce and Productivity Agency (AWPA), Skills Australia, was asked to provide an annual report to the Standing Council of Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment and the Standing Committee on Energy and Resources on skills shortages in the resources sector.
Skills Australia published an interim report in May 2011and AWPA published the Resources Sector Skills Needs report in 2012. The current report is under development and is due to be published in late 2013.
To guide this work, AWPA established the Resources Sector Skills Research Steering Committee which provided guidance on the scope and research methodology to be used to identify skills shortages and to undertake commissioned research. This committee is comprised of industry, government and peak body representatives.
AWPA considered a range of quantitative and qualitative data from a range of government and non-government agencies. It also conducted a consultation process with relevant industry and non-industry stakeholders in early 2012.
